Physicist discovers strange forces acting on nanoparticles
A new scientific paper published, in part, by a University of New Mexico physicist is shedding light on a strange force impacting particles at the smallest level of the material world.

The discovery, published in Physical Review Letters, was made by an international team of researchers lead by UNM Assistant Professor Alejandro Manjavacas in the Department of Physics & Astronomy.

The findings relate to an area of theoretical nanophotonics and quantum theory known as the Casimir Effect, a measurable force that exists between objects inside a vacuum caused by the fluctuations of electromagnetic waves. When studied using classical physics, the vacuum would not produce any force on the objects. However, when looked at using quantum field theory, the vacuum is filled with photons, creating a small but potentially significant force on the objects.
...

Imagine a tiny sphere (nanoparticle) rotating over a surface. While the sphere slows down due to photons colliding with it, that rotation also causes the sphere to move in a lateral direction. … The nanoparticle experiences a lateral force as if it were in contact with the surface, even though is actually separated from it.
A Quantum Theory containing photons, rotations and linear force. A great leap in my opinion. Miles said there may be days like this.

I love how we can't study it with classical physics but in 'quantum field theory, the vacuum is filled with photons'. Spoken as if their photons are something. What exactly does filled with mean when what you are filling it with has no size or mass? Where is this force coming from? F=ma, but their photons have no mass or acceleration!

Well, how about we make those photons something and then we can use them in classical physics again (where the word force actually means something). What a novel idea! If only we had a genius or two capable of taking it somewhere.

Unfortunately, I don't share your enthusiasm, Airman. I don't think they will take this in the right direction at all. They are already off the right path in that small part of the article. However, to recover some of that enthusiasm, we can take it somewhere and add it to our collection of evidence of exactly what they say it can't be.

I realised the title should be Lateral Force instead of Linear Force. Oh well, I never get anything right at first.

I remember a Miles paper describing how the purported Casimir effect shown at the time actually involved the charge field and gravity. This article may involve a new Casimir interpretation. Either way, the theory has many hits at the CNPS. I read an impressive post on that subject there yesterday.

Sorry Nevyn, I go into a deep sarcastic state when I see how contemporary mainstream guys twist pretzels beyond all recognition. They are only trying to do their best...

I used to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I find it harder and harder as time goes on.

Sorry, I missed your sarcasm and thought you were trying to be optimistic. In some ways it is a good thing, they can't keep mangling the experiments forever and everything they find seems to fit nicely into Miles work but never their own. Not that they would ever admit that, but all you need to do is keep asking what their terms mean and eventually they go full circle, showing that they have no foundations.
